The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), in partnership with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM), have issued a new publication providing guidance on nanoform grouping for hazard assessment.
The document, Usage of (eco)toxicological data for bridging data gaps between and grouping of nanoforms of the same substance, provides stakeholders with guidance on how to "scientifically justify that studies on one nanoform of a substance can be used to predict the hazard properties of other forms of the same substance." This means one set of testing could cover several or all nanoforms of a substance, which could significantly streamline the registration process.
ECHA believes that effective grouping reduces costs and burdens on product developers by enabling much more efficient testing of substance nanoforms, while still meeting all requirements of REACH regulations.
